discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49742646, title=Show HN: The Heilbronn Problem – packing points to avoid small triangles, Hi HN, I made this site to track the latest records for the Heilbronn problem. This is a pretty famous problem in the world of optimization, and I wanted to encourage people to contribute to it with a nice-looking site that visually shows what solutions look like. If you're an HN reader, you can probably contribute to this site! A large number of recent contributions have been made by people with a non-math background, and actually the person holding the most records on the site currently is a computational biologist. I'd love to hear what you think!

Things To Have 0 open listings
discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49747847, title=Show HN: Things To Have – free, privacy caring, mighty wishlist app, Things To Have is a wishlist app. I started working on it in 2022 as a pet project for my friends, then turned it into a serious app in 2024. I built it because I disliked other such apps – they were either too ephemeral, limited to a specific use case, or felt like a TV shop. I wanted to build an app that would be calm and would cater to thoughtful buyers, collectors, and enthusiasts. I also didn't forget about birthdays, so reservations and other birthday QoL are present. As it always was a hobby/passion project, I wasn't bothered by "time to market" and overengineered a lot of things. For example, it ships transparency-aware blurhash for each image, has many unadvertised Drag'n'Drop interactions like MacOS has, 1001 ways to upload files into a form, etc. It is also powered by a quirky stack: it is running on Cloudflare Workers and D1, and the code is written using Hono ( https://hono.dev/ ) and Vue, tied together by a custom Inertia ( https://github.com/brachkow/hono-inertia ) adapter. I also use better-result ( https://better-result.dev/ ) to bring sane errors to JavaScript. All this results in a scalable, cheap, and extremely easy way to write full-stack apps, which feels like old-fashioned MVC. I believe my app stands out from both established apps and beige vibecoded competitors and is worth your try. And if not, I hope you find the listed tech fun at least...

discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49616713, title=Show HN: Thread to Self – a private message thread with yourself, Hello, Thread to Self was created because I wanted a way to capture thoughts (random or otherwise) in a single stream. I didn't want to have to deal with folders or tags or any other type of organization took that would make it become an admin heavy burden. This is a naive IOS and local first, so no accounts, no metrics and no mining. It's you and your thoughts. I did use AI to build this but it was not a 1 day endeavor. To get her took months of building and refining. I use it daily (in fact multiple times a day) but want to see if other people would actually want to use it. Where are the pain points that make the app to simplistic. Thanks,

Threshyr 0 open listings
discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49701054, title=Show HN: Threshyr – An offline automatic time tracker with on-device AI, I've built and continuously improved Threshyr based on the problem I faced myself. I was working on more than 3 projects at one time. At the end of any day/week/month if I had to calculate how many hours I have worked on each one, I would always not be able to calculate an accurate time. Because I had to just reconstruct it from memory instead of any real record. Every tracker I tried solved this either by: - sending my activity to their cloud or - by making me press start and stop, which I most of the time forget or - requires a monthly subscription. So I built Threshyr to address all of these pain points. It is a background time tracker for Windows and macOS. It runs entirely locally, recording the duration and window title for active application and active browser(excluding Firefox) domain locally on your machine. It comes up with predefined categories for installed application and browser domain. Each category can be marked as Productive(green color), Neutral(gray color) and Unproductive(red color). Users can modify predefined and can also create their own custom categories. Threshyr utilizes categories, tagging rules and light weight offline AI model called Threshyr AI to classify activity for projects. Users can review the activity classified by Threshyr-AI, can modify the project or even create rules based on the classification. As users review more and more activities, Threshyr-AI gets more accurate with each review. Threshyr lets users see how focused they were, how often and for how long they were distracted, and what was their duration for their productive and unproductive apps and domains. Threshyr also calculates hourly and fixed totals for client projects. Privacy is the core constraint I built this around: - No account, no password, no email required. - No keystroke logging, no screenshots, no behavioral analytics. - Zero cloud inference. - There are exactly two daily network calls: an anonymous daily ping to check for version updates and an active user ping. Threshyr is closed source right now. I am a solo developer in Pakistan trying to build a longer term and sustainable alternative to expensive time trackers. Right now, it is in pre-release. It is completely free to use with no obligation to pay (though there is an optional early-purchase at $29/year if you want to support it). After the pre-release ends Threshyr will be priced at $58 per year. No monthly subscription. I might add a lifetime price. Linux builds and team features are not available yet. Threshyr does not support Firefox I’d appreciate any feedback from the community, especially on how well the classification and tagging rules work for your specific workflows. Also let me know your thoughts about a lifetime price. I'll be in the thread to answer any questions.

Timeline, a team project planner with a fast canvas Gantt view 0 open listings
discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49748928, title=Show HN: Timeline, a team project planner with a fast canvas Gantt view, I do a lot of project management, and for years I wanted a tool that was simple, interactive, and just worked: a timeline I could see and touch, where moving a task is a drag and not a form. Nothing I used felt like that. I didn't have the coding chops to build it myself until AI-assisted coding made it possible, so over the last few months I built it with Claude Code doing most of the typing and me doing the design, testing, and a great deal of arguing about how dragging should feel. This is the result, and I'm open-sourcing it. What it does: - A Gantt-style timeline you drag, resize, zoom and pan. Dependencies draw as arrows and the critical path is computed and highlighted. - A board view of the same tasks grouped by status, and a list view for phones. - Projects are private to their members, with owner / editor / commenter / viewer roles and reusable teams. - Templates: start from a plan (MVP launch, seed round, hiring, OKR quarter, and some hobby ones) anchored to a date, or save your own. - A documented REST API (Django + DRF, JWT) behind a React frontend. The part that took the most work is the rendering. Everything scroll-sensitive (ruler, lane backgrounds, dependency arrows, minimap) is drawn on canvas rather than the DOM, and the visible range is culled, so panning and zooming stay smooth with hundreds of events. Safari in particular was a fight: per-scroll SVG and stacks of sticky layers stall it badly, and canvas was the way out. One design choice you'll notice immediately: events are "sticky". A plain drag pans the timeline; you hold Ctrl or Cmd to move an event. It stops accidental nudges, and the app tells you the first time you try it, but I'm curious whether people would rather have the opposite default. Try it with no setup other than Docker: git clone https://github.com/vakahnke/Timeline.git && cd Timeline SEED_DEMO=1 docker compose up --build then open localhost:5173 and sign in as demo / demo12345. Apache 2.0. Not done yet: iCalendar export, Microsoft Project import/export, manual ordering within board without an account. Issues and PRs welcome. Happy to answer anything about the canvas work, the tenancy model, or what it was like building this with AI as a non-programmer.

Works with Codex, Claude, Cursor, or any other agents. But some design tasks need different software — tailored exactly to your needs and creative vision. Apps that aren’t vendor-locked. Apps you can freely modify to make your workflow faster and better. A year ago I started building design apps for the projects I was working on, but I was always starting from scratch or babysitting AI over and over again just to get a proper canvas, controls, toolbar or timeline. That took time. Plus AI sucks at design, so the components it spat out were usually terrible. I wanted to work in an environment I’d actually love to spend my workdays in, so I designed and built Toolcraft. What Toolcraft includes

discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49715460, title=Show HN: TrailVid – Cinematic Travel Animations, I originally started with this project because my partner wanted a way to make visually clean travel videos for her social media. The ones that existed felt a bit too expensive for the quality they delivered, and many of them leaned heavily on a cartoonish visual style. So I decided I'll build an app for her that fits her needs, and over the last few months it has become bigger and better. I've even created my own map tiles because licensing existing ones was not cost effective. Now it's finally open for public beta and I'd love to get some feedback before I bring this to the App Store.

Trailogs 0 open listings
discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49643847, title=Show HN: Trailogs – A team's operational history you can ask questions about, Hi! My name is Marko, and I'm a developer (primarily backend) who loves building stuff. I've been trying to solve a problem of scattered operational context across Slack threads, tickets, meetings, etc. (my way)... The idea of Trailogs is to be a central event-based history, where each event (log) has structure around it, like categorization, ownership, etc... It has an exploration page, which is basically an AI chat where you can ask questions about what is happening in the company, why a certain decision was made, what is going on with a specific customer, who was responsible for a certain thing, etc... I realized that "what should I ask?" could be a problem, so the chat gives you suggestions based on your role in the team and interests. So if you are a developer, you could get a suggestion to ask about a certain deployment/feature release from today. If you are in sales, you'll get a suggestion to ask about negotiations that happened today with a certain customer. The chat is currently powered by OpenAI. Now, I understand the privacy concerns and sensitivity of the data, so I'm planning an implementation with a self-hosted LLM, or the possibility for users to use their own LLM. I was thinking about how to reduce the friction so teams don't have to manually log stuff every time, so, for now, I implemented the possibility to integrate through an API and webhooks (incoming, outgoing). Also, since a lot of team conversations happen in Slack, I've built a Slack integration so you can ask questions directly from Slack or ask it to draft a log based on what was discussed in a thread. The app is functional and can be tried. It has a registration form, but I made it possible to just continue with a demo account, so you don't have to leave any personal information if you don't want to, and you can quickly get straight to the demo workspace. Poke around, let me know what you think. :)

Tray indicator for WSL2: on/off, CPU and memory, one-click shutdown 0 open listings
discussion=https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49724577, title=Show HN: Tray indicator for WSL2: on/off, CPU and memory, one-click shutdown, When using my PC for private stuff like gaming or video editing I wanted an direct way (without calling wsl --shutdown) of turning WSL2 off. Created (with a help of Claude, it is 2026...) a small tray tool which barely uses resources and provides also resources usage info. Grey means the VM is off. Green, orange or red means it is running, coloured by the higher of its CPU and memory share of the machine. Hover for the numbers, menu entry to shut it down. Two things that were not obvious: * Presence is the vmmemWSL process existing. WSL reports on distributions, not on the VM. * CPU and memory come from NtQuerySystemInformation(SystemProcessInformation). vmmemWSL runs as SYSTEM, so OpenProcess is denied to a normal user and GetProcessTimes is out. A snapshot of ~250 processes takes 3.8 ms and needs no handle. Rust, windows-sys only. 282 KB exe, 3.9 MB private memory after half an hour, one thread while idle. Working set is 10 to 19 MB, mostly shared DLLs. Targeted for Windows 11. Older Win10 builds call it vmmem (Use -process flag). Shutdown asks for confirmation. BSD 3-Clause.
